about

I’m dropping two new tracks on Bandcamp today. One is “Survival Skills", a collaboration with my long time friend, the inimitable Angelica Bess. The other is a remix I made of Do It 4 U, a new take on the original Human Energy track featuring the awe-inspiring Dawn Richard.

Bandcamp is waiving its commission for the entire day, so 100% of the proceeds for these tracks will go to the NAACP Legal Fund, Color of Change, and LGBTQFund. Additionally, all Machinedrum Bandcamp releases and IAMSIAM label share profits on Bandcamp for the entire month of June will be donated to the Black Lives Matter movement.

We stand strongly for the oppressed and our goal is to help create a new world for black people and anyone else that experiences injustice to live in without fear.

On a personal note, these past two weeks have been very emotional. It's been hard to find the words to express my feelings on it all, especially to people I don't know.

As a straight white man, I know that I will never fully understand the pain and suffering that black people, people of color, LGBTQ+, and women have endured and continue to endure, but it is my goal to learn as much as I can.

I will be honest. At first, I did not understand the rioting, the looting, and the violence that's happening right now. My gut reaction was to focus on promoting peace, love, and unity. I wanted to talk about consciousness, vibration, oneness, and how we could overcome all of this without fighting or anger.

Very quickly I started to see that the message of peace, love, and unity has not been taken seriously by the powers that continue to oppress, victimize, brutalize, and slaughter innocent black people.

I then began to understand more and more why people have turned to anger, violence, and hostility as a reaction to this feeling of hopelessness. If people had simply marched the streets again in peaceful protest, as we have done many times in the past, we would have seen the same result: An echo chamber of voices unheard by those that stand in the way of change.

What is happening now feels very different.

This time of great upheaval has forced all of us to take a look at ourselves and decide which side we stand on: The side that stands for solidarity or the side of division.

This moment has made the pain and anger of the oppressed impossible to ignore. This moment has exposed the racism, bigotry, selfishness, divisiveness, ugliness, and hatred in our friends, family, community, and leaders.

At the same time, this moment has shined a light on the beauty, unity, gratitude, selflessness, and compassion in those who are on the side of change. This moment has shaken people out of their apathy and out of their comfort zones.

More often than not, tragedy is the impetus of great change from within. While I believe that it is possible to change without experiencing tragedy, I understand that many of us have to experience it in order to change, especially when our issues come from deeply rooted beliefs and values that are engrained from our upbringing.

I hope that this moment in time has created an opportunity for all of us to wake up and become aware of what our values and beliefs truly are and how we can improve so we can create a world that accepts everyone for who they are.

With all of that said, I want it to be known that I stand with my beautiful black brothers and sisters and I promise to do everything within my power to help, understand, and be an ally.

I will continue to make it my goal to listen, learn about your struggles, and learn how I can help elevate, protect, and contribute to your growth and empowerment. I will make sure that my words and actions are in alignment with this vision, not only for black people but all people of color and genders that have experienced oppression for way too long.

I promise to not shy away from conversations with friends and family that make me or them feel uncomfortable.

I will do my best to make sure that I support your empowerment by becoming more aware of the products I buy, the services I use, the events I perform at, the musicians and labels that I endorse, and anything else that my time, money and energy go toward.

Not only today but tomorrow, and every day!
