about

Some habits never die, and in the case of Machinedrum - one of underground electronic music’s most consistent and prolific figures for over a decade now - there’s never a chance they could. Continuing his relentless stream of output, Machinedrum today announces the release of his “U Betta” single on Ninja Tune. Sounding something like an rnb love song transmitted from the kaleidoscopic future, the tune is his first original material released since last September’s Human Energy album, and the first in a string of new tracks fans can expect from the visionary in 2017.

Machindrum expands, ”’U Betta' is a throwback to how I was making tracks around 10 years ago when I first started experimenting with pop music, or at least my take on what I thought pop music could be in the future. In most of my recent work since Human Energy I had abandoned the neon synths, DSP, post production and over the top drum approach that I had back then. 'U Betta' takes that approach that I had back in the day and brings it freshly into 2017, connecting the dots with my past and present."

Human Energy marked a confident step into the light for Machinedrum, bringing him out of the darker ends of bass music darlinghood and brightly capturing the imagination of fans and music-making peers alike. “Maybe this is the album where Machinedrum breaks big,” Pitchfork mused, and big he broke - garnering critical praise, collaborating with contemporary rnb breakout D∆WN all over her debut record, remixing the likes of Sylvan Esso and Noisia, and touring the world with his Human Energy Live A/V show produced in collaboration with visual luminaries Strangeloop and Timeboy.

2017 shows no sign of his star’s descent, with more material forecasted, a spring European tour already in the bag, festival plays booked throughout the summer, a couple of dates supporting labelmate Bonobo, and an appearance at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre in August. His consistency is enough to make a mere mortal’s head spin, but we’d be lying if we said dizziness wasn’t part of the thrill.
